About

The next generation of writers has had to deal with two phenomena, one technological and the other historical. The COVID-19 pandemic forced education online, severing connections between students and their teachers. The rise of AI tools came about as students were learning how to re-integrate themselves into an in-person learning environment — and as teachers were furiously working to close learning gaps that had opened while students were learning at home.

This has led to difficulties in teaching students to write well. Students rely on such AI tools as ChatGPT not just to research, brainstorm and edit but also to compose entire essays. When teachers fail to notice that their students are not writing the work they are submitting, the education process suffers — and so does student learning.

At Engaged Writers, we seek to bring students back to the work of communication. We focus on strategies and resources to help teachers engage their students with reading content that is high both in interest and appropriate in rigor. Then we provide Socratic seminar-style questions as well as multiple-choice practice passages that are appropriate for both SAT* and AP* English preparation and sample essays that mirror the format and expectations for AP* English preparation.
